New to Reporting Services

I am used to using Crystal Reports, but now with having Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005, I am trying to get along and use Reporting Services.

I need to understand or have somebody point me to a website or good book that I can use to learn about Report Server and the reports.

Here is the actual problem that I am having: I have built a report into the company intranet. This report works if I run it locally, however the print button does not show up understandably. Somebody mentioned making it a server-side report. So I imported the report into the Report Server of the SQL Server. At first I was getting an error message "The path of the item "\Reports\report.rdlc" is not valid. The path must be less than 260 characters long and restrictions apply. (rsInvalidItemPath)"

I believe I solved that error, but now when the page displays I do not get an error message, but I also do not have a report. The reportViewer is empty.

I then noticed that maybe I had to copy the report to IIS (I am using IIS 5.1). So I used the copy tool to copy the report to the directory for the report server in IIS (reportserver$sql). I have the property for the Server URL set to this directory and I have the report path set to \Reports\report.rdlc. Now I am getting an error message about "the item cannot be found."

Thanks for any information and help.

In SSRS all reports are actually stored inside of the Reporting Services database. As far I know, copying a file to the reporting server will not do anything for you. You need to 'Deploy' the report to the reporting services server from inside the report designer or BIDS (Business Intelligence Design Studio or something like that). However, you could also deploy the report from inside of reporting services web interface. I would also recommend the apress book on reporting services 2005. I bought the book because it was the first rs2005 book out of the gate. But it is actually really good. I started out with no knowledge of SSRS2005 and very limited knowledge of reporting technologies in general. This book made reporting services easy to learn.

New to Reporting Services

hi
I am new to reporting services of SQL Server. I just read an article about
it. In our organization, we are using Crystal Reports to develop reports for
our system. Backend is of course SQL Server 2000.
Can anyone please guide me that from where I should start to explore this
new technology?
Also is it necessary to use the reporting services of SQL Server 2000 via
VS.NET 2003 or can my VB 6 application develop the same kinds of reoprts?
Thanks in advance.
Syed Hussain Itiba NaqviI would purchase the book "Hitchiker's Guide to SQL Server 2000 Reporting
Services."
You can get a good deal at www.BookPool.com

Reporting Services comes in two parts.
1. The Server
2. Development Tools.
Ideally The Server components need to be on the same box as a SQL instance
(if you want to run it under the same license - see licensing for further
details) and the same box should have Web Server on also. RS uses the SQL
instance to store it's two new DBs to run the service.
The Development tools can be loaded onto any development machine, but
require VS.NET 2003. Once installed it adds Business Intelligence Projects to
the available solutions, and the Report Designer runs inside of VS.NET IDE
(as does the Crystal designer).
The cool thing about the designer is that you can preview (in like
real-time) the report results from inside the IDE, and also, by deploying it
to your localhost, you can see how the Reporting Server will handle it also,
all prior to deploying it to the 'real' server.
two books to get: Professional SQL Server Reporting Services - WROX and
Step-by-Step SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services - Microsoft. These two books
hold so much instructional info for the beginner.
Also, contact your local Microsoft Area Rep, they will assist you greatly. I
did, and they web-demo'd the technology to myself and my Managers during a
conference call. They have been excellent and very supportive.
Hope this assists,
Tony

New to Crystal Reports

Hi,

I am new to crystal Reports. I am on a project to migrate database from MS Access to MS SQL 2000 for a project which is in VB6. We are using Crysal Report 7.0. Earlier version reports in MS Access were working fine and used SelectionFormula. I want to use the same thing in my next MS SQL version also. But I don't know where and how to begin.

In my project, user will chose company (from combo box), subcompany (combo box), location (combo box), Item Category (combo box) and press the Report button which triggers the below code. Here each company name, subcompany name, location, item category were from different master tables and list of items for them is in another table. In report I need to list items for user selected company, subcompany, location, item category.

The code is like this:

Private Sub cmdAssetRpt_Click()
Dim crptApp As New CRAXDRT.Application
Dim crptRep As New CRAXDRT.Report

Set crptRep = crptApp.OpenReport(App.Path & "\Reports\AssetDetailsLocationWiseRpt.rpt")
crptRep.RecordSelectionFormula = "{LocationMaster.LocationName}='" & (cboLocation.Text) & _
"'and {ItemDetails.ItemGroupCod}='" & strItemgrpCode & "'"
If frmReports.CRViewer1.IsBusy = False Then
frmReports.CRViewer1.ReportSource = crptRep
frmReports.CRViewer1.DisplayGroupTree = False
frmReports.CRViewer1.ViewReport
End If
Exit Sub
End If
End sub

I was surprised how SelectionFormula will query my database to filter only requiered data and send it to report?
I need complete info about Reports, SelectionFormula, Tips, sample code anything. Plese help me. its urgent for me. Only this work is leftout in my project!!query is inside report, and selection formula just filters records returned by the query.sql

new to crystal report

hi friends,
i'm new to crystal report. i'd like to know which method is better to make report in crystal report. i developing programes using vb. could anyone help me pls
thankx for ur helpWhat version of Crystal are you using and what version of VB? Also, what kind of data are you going to use? From a database?

If you do a search on this forum for 'CDO', I have posted many examples. I use CR 8.5 using RDC and VB 6. CDO is Crystal Reports version of a recordset. It leaves all the data gathering up to VB so that Crystal never has to touch the database. VB loads all the data into an array, then stuffs the array into a CDO rowset (similar to an ADO recordset or an RDO resultset), then VB passes the CDO rowset to Crystal to display the data.|||Hi im totally new to crystal reports as well.. im using crystal reports 9 and vb .net. I want to pass parameters to a crystal report using vb.. what i exactly want is that the info the user has entered to a field will be passed to a certain portion in the crystal report.. after entering the required fields, i want to see the whole report in the next page.. how should i do this? help!|||If you do a search on this forum for 'CDO', I have posted many examples. New Forum

A new forum for all things Crystal Reports.You mean there will no longer be one thread that has 5000+ <ok maybe I kid> responses to it... Never did agree with that...|||There may still only be one thread in this forum...

well if I ever need to use crystal reports...I might need a couple pots of coffee to find read that one. I guess I always meant to say hey, Cimp <or whatever that moderators name is> umm don't you think seperate threads would be better? No doubt the originator of the thread seems to know the crystal...but with one big glob it doesn't make searching for a specific issue <if your doing something with the crystal> easy...or I'd say not at all, because you can't jump to a specific response <in a thread> in a search result...or so I think...didn't go check.|||Originally posted by Mick

Well....

The forum may only have one thread with 5000+ posts; however, there will be the option to do a couple of other (shorter) threads on the topic as well. :D

New Crystal Reporter

Hi everyone. I've been developing an application which needs to create a couple of reports. I was going to use microsoft Graph for the Charts but it turns out that that's not recommendable.

So I decided to get into Crystal Reports. The point is that the help I've found is somewhat generic and I need something a little more specific.

What I need to do is to show a chart with the completed and not completed sales in a specific month. And show another form with the percentages of this sales.

I'm using VB6 and an Access database for my project.

If anybody knows where can I find some help... please let me know

Thanx in advance :wave:Create a query in access that summarizes your sales data by month, giving a field for Year & Month, and fields for Complete and Incomplete.
Use the Report Expert to connect to the Access Database, once connected you should see your query exposed as a Stored Procedure.
Select the query, and select field you wish to show, and then group by month.

When done, you should be able to right-click on the Group Header and select ChangeGroup. If you have a properly formated date CR will auto-recognise and type the field as date, and you should see a dropdown combo with caption "The section will be printed".
Select "for each month" from the combo.

When designing the Chart, select Advanced in the Data tab, and in the "Place Chart" combo, you should be able to select the group name, if you want to print the chart for each month, or select once per report option. Later you will put the Chart in the Group Footer if you selected the option to print each change of date (which in this case means each month, cos that's the group selection formula you selected), or put it in the report footer if you selected the "Once per Report" option.
Then select the summary fields that your SQL statement created from the list named "Available Fields" and put them in the "ShowValue(s)" list.
Oh, and don't forget to select an option for the combo above the "Show Values" one.

That just about ought to get you close......

Thanx Dave... I know this maybe a little abusive but, do you have some code so I have another reference?

Anyway... thanx for your reply, I'll try to get it running :wave:|||Do you mean the SQL, or code for the report?
Need to work out what you do and don't know......
Only real code in this is SQL, aprt from a formula you'd need to sum the values of Completed and Not Completed, so something like:

SELECT Id, Date, Completed, Value from Sales WHERE (Sales.Date > DateAdd("d", -14, Date()) AND Sales.Date <= Date())

would give you last 14 days of data.
I'd make Completed field a boolean so you can use it in the report to apply logic to an aggregation.

I've attached a zip file with a small table layout in Excel format. You can import it into Access and then open the report.
You may have to reset the Location to ensure that the ODBC connection on your box works Ok - see Database menu, Set Location... option.

Don't forget, if you find what I've given you useful, remember to rate the post and finalise the thread.

Dave|||I mean the CR Code. That's what I'm new at. The query is not that big of a deal (kind of hehe) but the problem is that I don't know how to import those results to a .rpt

I am checkin the zip you attached and hope to find out a way to create my graph. I'll rate the thread anyway.

Thanx a lot springsoft

New Crystal Report Question

Hi guyz! i have a problem with my crystal report 9. im using vb6 in win xp. my prob is when i print my report in second attempt it will just eject the paper without print. but in first, its fine..

here's my code:

MyReportPrintCheck.DiscardSavedData

MyReportPrintCheck.SelectPrinter printer.DriverName, printer.DeviceName, printer.Port
MyReportPrintCheck.PaperOrientation = crDefaultPaperOrientation
MyReportPrintCheck.PaperSize = crPaperLetter
MyReportPrintCheck.PrintOut False <-- i think the "False" here is the problem because when i remove the false it will print though it will take time coz it will prompt me a message if i will print all or selection..thats why i put "False" here so that when i click the Print button.. it will automatically print. can anyone help me?
