New SQL Server and Photos

I heard that you can store photos with the row in the new SQL Server (a
photo data type?). Is this true? If so, is there a speed advantage if
you have an e-commerce platform with thousands of products?

Help appreciated.
Thanks,
Frank

*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***I'm not sure what you're referring to - MSSQL already supports the
image data type for storing up to 2GB of binary data in a row (which
could be photos or anything else).

Although I haven't worked with a system like that myself, previous
newsgroup posts seem to suggest that many people prefer to store only a
path to the binary file in the database, and leave the file itself in
the filesystem.

That's been my approach. The file system's on the whole a much more
efficient way to deal with such things, provided you've guarded against
path-traversal security problems and the like. For one, you're
funnelling less data through SQL Server itself, and two, NTFS is built
to handle exactly this kind of work in the first place.

There may be some circumstances where you need to have the data in the
row -- I think TerraServer uses this approach -- but most people are
not going to be building TerraServer!

New SQL Book Scam or Not?

Has anyone heard of this book? I got this e-mail and the book looks good, but I'm afraid it's a scam because I can't find the book online anywhere else. I also can't locate this Beyond Books, Inc. See Email below:
FROM: "Microsoft Professional Learning Series" <msdev_book-offers@.in-the-trenches.com>"
Dear Microsoft Professional,
We would like to inform you that the book that you've been looking & waiting for is finally here!
This hot new book has the industry buzzing about its hardhitting & revealing content. It drives deep into issues no other industry guru or MVP has properly addressed and follows through with powerful solutions to them. Learn advanced & secret techniques u
sed by the pros "in the trenches" and get complete solutions & code that can literally save you thousands of hours of research, design, development, coding, and testing (not to mention all the frustration, headaches, hair pulling, forehead smacking, & oth
er pains from the process).
If you are a SQL Server developer, a .NET developer, or a Development Team Lead, an I.T. Manager or Project Manager for a software product built on .NET & SQL Server, you owe it to yourself to buy & read this book. The information that you’ll get will b
e priceless. Forget all those lame "bibles" out there. This book will be the prize of your library, the key book that will guide you in your decisions & provide you with hardhitting information.
From the author:
This new book truly reveals advanced & secret techniques of SQL Server & .NET professionals and provides complete & customizable solutions to real world problems. Face it, you don’t want to buy another developer’s book that turns out to be just anothe
r big reference manual. You also don’t want to go to yet another mindless or boring developer’s conference or seminar where you’ll end up wondering if you’ll ever use any of the stuff you’ve just “learned”. And those online discussion boards
can only help so much by pointing you in a certain direction, but fall short in providing you with a complete solution or the big picture. Believe me, as a professional developer, I’ve done all those things, and I know that you’ll find this book is t
he only learning resource available that GOES THE DISTANCE when it comes to discussing, solving, & providing these solutions. This book has over 600 pages of golden information, complete solutions, and valuable code you will not find anywhere else. You wi
ll even find sections that cover SQL Server or .NET issues or topics that have never been addressed or shared in any other developer resources or public media. You won’t find these techniques in any other book, developer seminar, or online resource anyw

new MCDBA exams?

From browsing the MS sight I see they still arent available. But has anyone
heard when they may be coming out?
TIA, ChrisRChris,
This might help if you're refering to Windows 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcdba/2003faq.asp
As for SQL 2005 I'd suspect 6-18 months after November 2005.

New export option

Hello Fellow RS
Has anyone ever heard of or tried adding to the report export list?
I've read through the BOL for report export options and searched the
web for advice. There is quite a bit of information folks have shared
on ways to export stored procedure results to a fixed length text
file. But I haven't found anything on exporting from a report to a
text file.
Is it was possible to export a report into a fixed length text file
from a Reporting Services website report? The only text based export that Reporting Services does is CSV (Comma
Delimited). On adding a type to the export list you would have to write
your own rendering extension to transform the data in the report and that
isn't an easy task. If you look in the rsreportserver.config file you'll
see a <Render> section that contains all of the various rendering
extensions available to Reporting Services.
You can find more information about creating a rendering extension here:

One last question. When you say "Fixed length text file" do you mean a
"fixed width" text file or an actual fixed size of the text file being
produced?

Thanks for your response.
I'm beginning to think that SS Integration Services would be the best
bet to accomplish this task.
(And I did mean fixed width columns in the text file.)
Thanks again!|||On Oct 26, 12:09 pm, asflp <fpetrive...@.gmail.com> wrote:

Just an add-on comment, I followed the link and I really can't tell
you why I didn't get to that part of BOL when I was reading about the
export options. BOL certainly is vast and interesting to navigate.|||You have to know the secret code word and hand shake to be able to really
search books online :)
It's always easy to find things when you know exactly what you are looking
for. If you search for "custom rendering extension" then you'll find that
section as the first result. If you have no clue that is what it is that
you are trying to do then searching for that stuff can be quite difficult.
