New SQL Server Install Advice

I have a new Dell PowerEdge 2800 running windows 2003. I have 2 RAID
containers as the machine has a PERC 4 controller. The machine has x2 73GB
SCSI and x4 146GB SCSI HDD.
Container 1
--
The OS C drive (partition of 12GB) is in RAID 1 and so is E drive which has
56GB free.
Container 2
--
A D drive for Data I created and also L for Log which I assigned as dynamic
drives.
Is this setup Ok for running SQL2000. The Data files will reside in D and
the Log files will reside in L. Is this Ok for the read/write access that
occurs when SQL is accessed?
Please help.

We want max. performance. Is this OK?
Furthermore, I installed SQL2000 and it came with 4 CDs:
1> SQL 2000 Standard (Personal)
2> SQL 2000 Standard
3> SP4
4> Reporting Tools
I installed Disk #1, asked me no product key, I selected 5 CALS from the
dropdown (which was how many I bought) and that was it. I have the SQL
Service running and the SQL Tools (enterprise manager). What is the
difference between the 2 Cds mentioned above?
In Enterprise Manager, when I right-click the (local) Server, it says I have
Microsoft SQL Server Std Edition installed. This is very odd, I hope I have
done this right as it did not ask for a serial product key or anything.
Please verify the above it OK.

New SQL 2005 - Where has Query Builder and Copy Objects gone?

I am sure there will be a simple answer to this but it has got me stumped.

Having to move over to Vista with my new machine so I am having to switch to 2005 version for my development but still upload to a 2000 server.

I have had a look at 2005, like the new Management Studio, however I ahve a couple of problems which I can not find the answer to.

Firstly, the SQL Query Builder, where has it gone? I often have to import/export data from Excel files and used to use the SQL query builder to create my queries. If I want to copy all columns it is fine but if I want to import select columns I find it easier to view a list and then just add the ones I want.

Am I missing something here?

Secondly, copying stored procedures, before when running DTS ther were three options, Copy Tables/Views, Data Using Query and Copy Objects.

I used the copy opbjects a lot as it was a very quick way of transfering a group of tables and stored prcoedures that I had created. This appears to have now been replaced with Copy Database, which copies everthing, can can not be used to copy from SQL2005 to SQL2000.

If I want to copy multiple stored procedures from SQL2005 to SQL2000 how is it done now? I have tried finding out but have not been sucessful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

When run Management Studio open Database Engine Server , you'll have all the server objects in an explorer view, then "New query..." to open a window to write a select.

Try database right click->Tasks->Generate Scripts

create a new Integration Services project with SQL Server Business Intelligence Studio and use "Transfer SQL Server Objects Task" ; with it you can transfer all objects needed.|||

The Query Builder is a bit 'hidden'.

In Object Explorer, right-click on the primary table, select [Open Table].

In the output pane, if the table is large, in order to 'stop' the data from displaying, click on the RED 'stop' button at the bottom of the pane. (Yes, we know that this is a pain, and it will most likely be fixed -but that is the way it is for now.)

At the upper left of the toolbar, click on the [SQL], [Criteria],[Diagram] panes as needed.

Again, in the Object Explorer, right-click on the database name, and select [Tasks]. There you can select either -Export Data to move tables and data to another server, or [Generate Scripts] to script out Stored Procedures and Functions, then EXECUTE that script in the other server/database. Explore and follow the Wizard prompts.

New setup of MySQL on my machine....

Hello friends, I am a begginer in MySQL. Kindly guide me how can I
install and run MySQL server on my machine (Runnig Wnidows XP
professional and SQL server 2000). Is it neccessary to remove SQL
server from the machine before installing MySQL and what version of IIS

New server registration error

Hi, I've just installed MSDE 2000 Release A on a Windows NT Server 4.0 w/SP6. I'm on a WinXP machine and I've installed the Enterprise Manager, and am trying to register a new server registration. However, I'm getting the error: Login failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. I've made sure that both the client and server are using TCP/IP for the protocol list, and I've tried using the physical server's name and it's IP address to register, but keep getting the same error. I did try searching, and nothing I found seemed to pertain to my situation. But I fixed the problem, so if anyone wants to know, I used Windows authentication to register the server, then I right-clicked on the server, chose properties, and went to the security tab. In there, it was checked to use "Windows only" under the Authentication section. I changed it to "SQL Server and Windows", restarted the SQL service, deleted my Windows SQL registration. Then I was able to successfully register my SQL server using SQL Authentication!

New Project wont compile

I have a new machine with VS2003, VS2005 and SQL 2005 installed. I need to
work in a VS2003 and SQL 2005 project which uses SSRS 2K because where I
deploy it to doesn't have SSRS 2005 (only SSRS 2K). I have been able to
deploy my 2k reports (from my old dev machine) to the production server
where they are using sql05 and ssrs 2k just fine.
On my new dev machine I have installed the report designer for ssrs2k so I
can create ssrs 2k projects in vs2003. however, they wont compile and I
don't get any text for build errors. when I build the project I get the
build error and immediately the output window switches to the task list
where normally I would get a list of build errors. however, in this case
the task list is empty. it appears that something goes sooo wrong that it
cant even list the build errors. I haven't installed SSRS 2k sp1 or 2 yet
as I don't know if that's a good idea in on this machine since it doesn't
actually have SSRS 2k installed on it. any idea how I can trouble shoot
this?

machine and new ones created on this machine.
no i havent installed any addins. this is a clean machine that was just
setup a few weeks ago and im now bringing online as a full time dev machine.
it has just the basic MS stuff installed. I tried to keep this machine
extra clean so in this case I didnt isntall VS6 and SQL2k, and non of the
WinFX stuff. Just office 2003 pro, Visio 2003, VS2003, VS 2005, SQL 2005
SSRS 2005 and SSRS 2k designer addin.
I have not installed any SPs for SSRS 2K yet.

I am trying to put SQL Server 2000 and MSDE on same local machine. I install

only because I couldn't figure out how to get Online Books going to find ou

the first SQL Server instance you installed hase become the default instance
becouse you did not provide instance name...
in order to install other SQL Server and/or MSDE instancese, they must be
"named" instances...

New Login with Trusted Connection

I have my development machine connected to my SQL 2000 server using trusted connection.

I want to setup another machine for testing purposes.

How do I setup SQL for another user? I can't get pass the Domain, when I setup a new login using trusted connection. It only shows the admin and my account on the sql server machine.

Once that is completed, how to I setup a w2k pc for trusted connection?

Can you be a little more clear on what the error is that you're getting? Can you tell me exactly what steps you took to get you to where you're stuck?

Greg,
Not getting an error, just could not complete the new login without a Domain.

What I ended up doing was adding a Local User Account to the server, using the same username and pwd as on the client pc.

I could then add the user login to SQL and use Windows Authentication, not SQL Server Authentication. I tried the new deployment and the win2k machine connected right up.

I don't have a domain controller. I have a small network with a server, 4 pcs, a router(broadband) and a lynksys hub that I uplink to the router.

My SQL2000 server is enabled for windows authentication. I enabled my XPpro a while back but forgot the steps. I thought it was somewhat obscure if I remember correctly.

Do you happen to have links to instructions on how to setup the different os

Mike, I"m completely confused. What are you trying to do, create a new login using SQL Server Authentication? Not sure what an OS has to do with this.

I have an application I'm developing that I'm using Windows Authentication for the SQL login instead of SQL Server Authentication.

Since I'm not using a Domain controller, I think things are a bit different.

Additionally I'm trying to setup the SQL Server for Windows Authentication.
1. Do you normally have to setup a Local User/Groups account on the server for each SQL login?. This is what I had to do to be able pick from a domain in the SQL Login setup window.

I'm trying to setup the best way to use Windows Authentication from different PC client OS's with SQL server.
2. On XPpro / home, is there anything special that has to be done?

New Instance Install

I installed another instance of SQL Server onto my
machine. I currently have a personal edition and decided
to install a second instance. It failed at MDAC
installation. When I look at the setup log, it says the
installation failed.
My dilema is that I cannot start the previous installation
I had before. When I activate Enterprise Manager, I get a
Snap-in failed to initialize : Microsoft Enterprise
Manager. I tried everything I know to start SQL - but
cannot. Can someone help please?

Try re-installing MDAC 2.7 SP1 and try it again. Let me know if it still

From command prompt of server execute (Server Network Utility) :-
svrnetcn.exe
Here, You can enable the TCPIP protocol
By default MSDE only support Windows authentication. So try creating an ODBC
using a Domain id. Ensure that domain user has got access to SQL Server.
By default users of local administrator group will have access. Have a look
into books online for the below procedures to give preevilages:-
1. sp_grantlogin
2. sp_grantdbaccess

I have a newly installed Windows 2003 EE sp1 with Sql Server 2000 sp3
machine. I restored a database to the machine that had several full text
catalogs in it. I'm trying to go in and do a rebuild on the catalogs. When
I do this.. I get the error:
Error 7635: The Microsoft Search service cannot be administered under the
present user account.
The Sql Server Agent is being started with the system account.
I've tried this on a windows 2003 sp1 standardard machine with sql 2000 sp3.
I get the same error. It's making me belive that perhaps sp1 put some
security on that needs to be changed...
can someone help me get Full Text going agian.

Have you or anyone else removed or altered the login BUILTIN\Administrators
? If so, can you either re-establish it or reset the defaults back to master
database with sysadmin rights? If not (for security reasons), you may want
to implement the following T-SQL code as the external MSSearch service
(should be running under the system account) needs sysadmin rights when
accessing SQL Server:
exec sp_grantlogin N'NT Authority\System'
exec sp_defaultdb N'NT Authority\System', N'master'
exec sp_defaultlanguage N'NT Authority\System','us_english'
exec sp_addsrvrolemember N'NT Authority\System', sysadmin

(MSSQLServer) has been altered via Win2K's Component applet vs. being
altered via SQL Server Enterprise manager. The later is the only place where

2003 sp1 sql 2000 sp3 boxes that fixed the problem. on the windows 2003 sp1
sql 2000 sp3 box.. it didn't. i'll restart teh sql service on Sunday and

I have found a couple of web sites that discuss moving a sql server and its
database from one machine to another but nothing in good detail.
I have also looked out on the Knowledgebase and have found nothing as of
yet. I know there has to be some articles on this.
Anybody have a link to one?

|||1. backup your DBs on first server
2. restore your DBs on second server
3. on second server create user accounts that you wanted to transferred from
first server to second server
4. in each DB run sp_change_users_login 'Update_One' to map each database
user (select * from sysusers) to the new accts you just created in step 3.
You can write a cursor to run dynamically.
