Everyone,
I'm installing SQL Server 2000 SP2 virtual server onto a Windows 2003
Cluster. The install process seems to install sql server fine on both
machines, however when the installer gets to creating the virtual resources
the install fails after about 5 to 10 minutes. I've looked at the sql logs
that are generated by the install and the only error code I see that is not 0
is an error trying to load a dll. After the install fails the installer
proceeds to uninstall all files and shortcuts from both nodes. I'm thinking
this has something to do with Windows 2003 not allowing anything less than
sp3 to start. Can anyone help clarify this for me. I've searched google and
have found many articles and kb about other issues but none so far that look
like this one. If this is caused by the sp3 issues is there a workaround or
is there a way to get an install CD of SQL Server 2000 with SP3.

Installing sp2 is no problem unless you don't patch it to sp3a after the
install completes.
Make sure you have gone through the check lists on
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../failclus.mspx

information on this.
Unless you are running tsql debugger in your clustered (production?)
environment, I doubt you would need this.
What components are you selecting in your install? Are you installing the
developers resources and code samples? It seems to me that this component is
probably installed with them as opposed to the default installation set.

|||I have removed the sql debug tools from the install. The error that was
showing up is no longer occuring. However, I still receive a message that the
installation has failed and the install rolls back.

|||Figured out the problem. I had taken the MSDTC offline per a step-by-step
provided by a sql server website. This was incorrect in my situation. Once I
brought the MSDTC online the install was successful. Additionally to apply
SP3 I had to manually bring the sql virtual server online before running the
sp3 setup.

New SQL Login cannot list DB in EM
I have a SQL Server 2000 instance running sp3 (in a
cluster).
When I create a NEW SQL user, and give that user access to
ONE database (public and DBO) I cannot list ANY databases
from Enterprise Manager when I login with that user. If I
refresh the Enterprise Manager Databases View, eventually
it will display the Databases - but only after about 10
minutes and I get access violation errors in my SQL and NT
logs. Even if I create a 'dummy SQL login' and give it
access to Northwind, the same results - I cannot list
databases in Enterprise Manager. I tried making the
Defalt DB both Master and the actual DB with the same
results
I tried to recreate this problem on another Clustered SQL
Server 2000 Instance - this one running sp3a, and I am NOT
able to recreate this problem.
I can't imagine that this is a Service Pack issue. Does
anyone have any suggestions?If you remove the guest user in any database a similar problem can occur.

New SQL Config - Hardware Proposal
Hi all,
I'm planning to install a new SQL 2005 Cluster ( Real MS Cluster ).
I wanted to know what you guys think about my config.
To roundup the charge the server will have :
- Over 6000 small databases ( with autoclose option = ON ) with a
total of 70 Gb of data
This number is so high because the main application is not
constructed well
In April of this year this number will fall to 1500 - 2000 databases
due to ( finally ) an update of this app
- +- 100 concurrent users ( via Citrix ) using this accounting
software including reporting
- Each user opens around 5 - 50 connections, sometimes I get more then
50 new connection/sec on the current system
The current system ( DL380 G3 2 * 2.8 Xeon ( 512K chache ) with 6Gb
memory ) is currently really underperforming.
2 local disks in RAID 0 as system disk and a Clariion CX3-10 ( all
fibre disks 10K ) with IPStore ( FalconStor ) in front for mirroring &
failover.
IO is no problem, Memory is fully used and CPU is avg 90 % ( with
Parallelism not active, otherwise avg 100 % and slow responses )
for the HP-minded I'm looking into following models :
- DL585 G2 with 4 procs AMD 2.8 ( dual core ) 8220SE ( too bad HP does
not have the quad-core's AMD yet )
- DL580 G5 with 4 procs Xeon 2.4Gh E7340 ( quad-core )
Is the xeon quad-core really that much faster giving a 40 % increase
in price
for the IBM-minded :
- x3850 M2 with 2 to 4 procs Xeon 2.4Gh E7330
Another question,why is there such a big price diff between HP & IBM
or should I not compare those 2 HP servers with this x3850 M2 system.
Anybody got an idea whether I should wait for the x3950 who did so
great on the TPC tests ?

Is your current system using AWE? You might get some CPU improvement by
going to 64bit. I would go with dual quad core 580 if I had a choice. It is
fast and leaves alot of room for growth.

Hi Sven.
For starters, hopefully you meant the system disks are in a Raid 1
pair not Raid 0.
I would take an Xray of your IPStor server and submit to

something looks like it has been configured incorrectly or if there is
a patch available for any known issues. There may be some specific
settings for optimizing the Clariion that have not been done.
Your mirroring may not be done in an optimal fashion. In order to
maintain consistency between disk arrays of unmatched performance you
would have a Safe Cache area. If this is set on the same disks as your
primary storage then you're just creating twice as many writes.
Also, if you have turned on TimeMarks/SnapShots the same goes for the
SnapShot Resource Area. Due to the Copy-on-First-Write pattern you
could be really pounding away at the same disks for all three writes
plus incurring hte overhead of the extra read for each write as it
goes through the CoFW process. Ideally TimeMarks/Snapshots should be
written to an IPStor server setup in CDP mode and leave your
provisioning server to just provisioning. In the "triplet"
configuration the CDP server would hold a complete copy of your data
and then create your TimeMarks/Snapshot from there instead of your
production disks.
Lastly, double check your PCI slots and your actual IO requirements.
If you're pumping everything through a single bus you may have hit a
bottle neck. Maybe you need more ports or at least dispersed ports so
that targets and initiators are on separate HBAs.
If you're going to go ahead with new servers and are going with the
DL585 then do make sure you populate all sockets. IPStor won't need
the processing power but due to the way the AMD chipset accesses
memory you won't get full memory optimization with empty sockets. The
DL385 may be sufficient with 2 x CPUs.

A further thought on this... you said you are running on a DL380 G3
which as I recall was a 32-bit platform which in turn means you are
running IPStor 4.x. Note: The final release of IPStor on 32-bit was
version 4.5 build 954 and then there have been patches and driver
updates not only to IPStor but to the OS as well. There is a
fundamental difference in how IPStor 4.x and IPStor 5.x (64-bit)
handles TimeMarks/Snapshots. In v4.x ALL TimeMarks and the resulting
CoFW blocks are held in memory until deleted. In v5.x only the LAST
TimeMark and current CoFW data is held in memory, the earlier ones are
flushed to disk. If you have EVER turned on the TimeMark feature, even
if you're not using it, then ALL writes are subject to examination and
as blacks were changed the original block is held in memory. You could
effectively be holding 100% of your disk in memory and still imposing
upto 30% performance hit watching changed blocks. If you have not
turned on TimeMarks then of course this is all irrelevant.
also, where is your mirror? You have only mentioned one IPStor server
and one Clariion. If you have virtualized the LUNs on the same
spindles you may have imposed a software Raid 1 on top of a hardware
raid 5 and then put both mirrors on the same spindles. It's only
natural that it would underperform.

total of 70 Gb of data
This number is so high because the main application is not

In April of this year this number will fall to 1500 - 2000 databases
due to ( finally ) an update of this app
- +- 100 concurrent users ( via Citrix ) using this accounting
software including reporting
- Each user opens around 5 - 50 connections, sometimes I get more then
50 new connection/sec on the current system
The current system ( DL380 G3 2 * 2.8 Xeon ( 512K chache ) with 6Gb
memory ) is currently really underperforming.
2 local disks in RAID 0 as system disk and a Clariion CX3-10 ( all
fibre disks 10K ) with IPStore ( FalconStor ) in front for mirroring &
failover.
IO is no problem, Memory is fully used and CPU is avg 90 % ( with
Parallelism not active, otherwise avg 100 % and slow responses )
for the HP-minded I'm looking into following models :
- DL585 G2 with 4 procs AMD 2.8 ( dual core ) 8220SE ( too bad HP does
not have the quad-core's AMD yet )
- DL580 G5 with 4 procs Xeon 2.4Gh E7340 ( quad-core )
Is the xeon quad-core really that much faster giving a 40 % increase
in price
for the IBM-minded :
- x3850 M2 with 2 to 4 procs Xeon 2.4Gh E7330
Another question,why is there such a big price diff between HP & IBM
or should I not compare those 2 HP servers with this x3850 M2 system.
Anybody got an idea whether I should wait for the x3950 who did so
great on the TPC tests ?

Is your current system using AWE? You might get some CPU improvement by
going to 64bit. I would go with dual quad core 580 if I had a choice. It is
fast and leaves alot of room for growth.

I would take an Xray of your IPStor server and submit to

that targets and initiators are on separate HBAs.
If you're going to go ahead with new servers and are going with the
DL585 then do make sure you populate all sockets. IPStor won't need
the processing power but due to the way the AMD chipset accesses
memory you won't get full memory optimization with empty sockets. The
DL385 may be sufficient with 2 x CPUs.

A further thought on this... you said you are running on a DL380 G3
which as I recall was a 32-bit platform which in turn means you are
running IPStor 4.x. Note: The final release of IPStor on 32-bit was
version 4.5 build 954 and then there have been patches and driver
updates not only to IPStor but to the OS as well. There is a
fundamental difference in how IPStor 4.x and IPStor 5.x (64-bit)
handles TimeMarks/Snapshots. In v4.x ALL TimeMarks and the resulting
CoFW blocks are held in memory until deleted. In v5.x only the LAST
TimeMark and current CoFW data is held in memory, the earlier ones are
flushed to disk. If you have EVER turned on the TimeMark feature, even
if you're not using it, then ALL writes are subject to examination and
as blacks were changed the original block is held in memory. You could
effectively be holding 100% of your disk in memory and still imposing
upto 30% performance hit watching changed blocks. If you have not
turned on TimeMarks then of course this is all irrelevant.
also, where is your mirror? You have only mentioned one IPStor server
and one Clariion. If you have virtualized the LUNs on the same
spindles you may have imposed a software Raid 1 on top of a hardware
raid 5 and then put both mirrors on the same spindles. It's only
natural that it would underperform.

- +- 100 concurrent users ( via Citrix ) using this accounting
software including reporting
- Each user opens around 5 - 50 connections, sometimes I get more then
50 new connection/sec on the current system
The current system ( DL380 G3 2 * 2.8 Xeon ( 512K chache ) with 6Gb
memory ) is currently really underperforming.
2 local disks in RAID 0 as system disk and a Clariion CX3-10 ( all
fibre disks 10K ) with IPStore ( FalconStor ) in front for mirroring &
failover.
IO is no problem, Memory is fully used and CPU is avg 90 % ( with
Parallelism not active, otherwise avg 100 % and slow responses )
for the HP-minded I'm looking into following models :
- DL585 G2 with 4 procs AMD 2.8 ( dual core ) 8220SE ( too bad HP does
not have the quad-core's AMD yet )
- DL580 G5 with 4 procs Xeon 2.4Gh E7340 ( quad-core )
Is the xeon quad-core really that much faster giving a 40 % increase
in price

Sven PeetersIs your current system using AWE? You might get some CPU improvement by
going to 64bit. I would go with dual quad core 580 if I had a choice. It is
fast and leaves alot of room for growth.

New Publication
Hi,
I'm trying to set up a new publication on a Veritas Cluster/SQL Server 2005.
The problem i'm having is that sql server reports that in order to do that
"SQL Server replication rquires the actual server name to make a connection
to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address or any other
alternate name are not supported"
When you run sql on a cluster you virtual names set up. How do i get aroud
this?

We are planning to move to SQL Server 2005 and we do have A/A cluster .
Which is the most efficient way to move from SQL Server 2000 A/A to SQL
Server 2005 A/A cluster.
1) Upgrade from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005
2) Install a new installion of SQL Server 2005 cluster and attach the 2000
databases.
I would do the second (install and migrate) the potential for nplanned
downtime is lower with that technique.

I would do the second (install and migrate) the potential for nplanned
downtime is lower with that technique.

When I create a NEW SQL user, and give that user access to ONE database (pub
lic and DBO) I cannot list ANY databases from Enterprise Manager when I logi
n with that user. If I refresh the Enterprise Manager Databases View, eventu
ally it will display the Da
tabases - but only after about 10 minutes and I get access violation errors
in my SQL and NT logs. Even if I create a 'dummy SQL login' and give it acce
ss to Northwind, the same results - I cannot list databases in Enterprise Ma
nager. I tried changing the
users default DB to Master - but I got the same results. It does not seem t
o matter what I make the default DB for this user - I still get the errors.
I tried to recreate this problem on another Clustered SQL Server 2000 Instan
ce - this one running sp3a, and I am NOT able to recreate this problem.
I can't imagine that this is a Service Pack issue. Does anyone have any sugg

I'd recommend opening up a support case with a SQL Engineer to review teh
Access Violation errors. All bets are off until you resolve this first.

and I checked this out by doing a select * from sysusers on each of my
Databases and 'some' of them had the guest account deleted directly from
their sysusers table!!!
To test the script in the article, I took a 'healthy' DEV Instance,
turned ON the switch in the server setttings that allows modifications
to be made directly to system catalogs, then I deleted the guest account
in one of my user databases. This 'broke' it and i could no longer get
a list of DBs in EM without sysadmin priviledges. I ran the script
which checked each DB and adds the guest account make in if it find it
missing and then disables the "allow modifications to be made directly
to system catalogs" switch. AND THIS WORKED!!!!
Thought I would pass this on. Thank you everyone for your input.

New Instance on Existing Cluster
Greetings,
I've inherited a cluster configuration and I'm new to administration of
clusters.
2 node 64 bit SQL running on 64 bit Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition.
I'd like to install a new instance to the cluster but do not know the
method. My searches have turned up only installing from scratch with custom
Instance name.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, you just need to run SQL Server Setup after you have placed one
or more disk resources in a new resource group. But you do need to do some
preparation work with IP addresses, network names, AD group(s) and
privileges, etc.

New fresh 2005 cluster and SCC error
I am trying to setup an active/passive cluster (everything on 32bit
plateforme) on a virtualized environment. I followed several docs provided by
microsoft especially the one on /prodtechnol/virtualserver/deploy/cvs2005.mpx.
Regarding the w2k3 itself it seems everything is correct, I did all
necesary tests for testing the failover from one node to another and
evrything works correctly.
When I launch SQL 2005 setup on node1 (node 2 of course is on), Setup stops
indicating that some requirements are not met, an SCC Error.
I have an AMD Athlon 64 proc 3000 2.00GHz with and each VM was granted 512 G
of Ram.
I understand that min req is 600Htz for Procs and 512. When I open the
summary.txt file I have the following :

In fact I remember that I had an alert (! inside Yellow triangle) in the
final step of adding the second node. So the alert indicated the following :
