new to crystal report

hi friends,
i'm new to crystal report. i'd like to know which method is better to make report in crystal report. i developing programes using vb. could anyone help me pls
thankx for ur helpWhat version of Crystal are you using and what version of VB? Also, what kind of data are you going to use? From a database?

If you do a search on this forum for 'CDO', I have posted many examples. I use CR 8.5 using RDC and VB 6. CDO is Crystal Reports version of a recordset. It leaves all the data gathering up to VB so that Crystal never has to touch the database. VB loads all the data into an array, then stuffs the array into a CDO rowset (similar to an ADO recordset or an RDO resultset), then VB passes the CDO rowset to Crystal to display the data.|||Hi im totally new to crystal reports as well.. im using crystal reports 9 and vb .net. I want to pass parameters to a crystal report using vb.. what i exactly want is that the info the user has entered to a field will be passed to a certain portion in the crystal report.. after entering the required fields, i want to see the whole report in the next page.. how should i do this? help!|||If you do a search on this forum for 'CDO', I have posted many examples. New to CE and need some advice.

Hello,

I am new to the CE OS, SQL CE and mobile computing in general. I have been developing database applications using MS products ever since Windows 3.11 and Visual Basic 1.0. I have used MS Access and SQL Server since they were first released. But, I have never worked with Windows CE or any of the mobile OSs or with SQL CE or SQL Mobile.

We now have a project that requires us to develop a database application on handheld devices using the CE 4.2 and CE 5.0 OSs.We will be using CF 2.0, VS 2005 and SQL 2005 for our development environment.

My questions are:

1. Which version of mobile SQL will allow us to best develop for both the CE 4.2 and 5.0 OSs usinf VS 2005? I have done a lot of reading online and it's pretty confusing. There are quite a number of different versions out there. It seems some work with 4.2 and some with 5.0. Is there a version that will work for both?

2. Is SQL CE 3.0 (Sql 2005 Mobile) available for other than Laptop and Tablet use? When i finaly got to the download page for this version there was verbiage there that suggested it was not available for smart devices.

3. What is a good source of info to resolve these questions? I am using the MSDN areas for CE and SQL Mobile but haven't really found what I need to get started. Any suggestions on forums, books, articles, blogs, etc... would be greatly appreciated.

I know these are very broad questions but I want to get some advice from the experienced before going to far here.

1: SQL Compact Edition (3.1 aka 3.0.5300) does have support for CE 4.2 via this hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934386/en-us

Support for CE 5.0 is built in the SDK:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E9AA3F8D-363D-49F3-AE89-64E1D149E09B&displaylang=en

2: SQL CE 3.0 (SQL Server 2005 Mobile) is only licensed for Windows CE based devices and Tablet PC use.

SQL Compact Edition (3.1) is licensed for use on Windows CE and Win32 platforms.

3: The overview posts at the top of this forum is probably a good starting point.

Thanks for the reply and the info Erik. That's what I neede to know.

I am now going though the "Creating a Mobile Application with SQL Server Mobile " SQL Server Mobile tutorial. I had a problem with the snapshot_agent user not being able to log in in order to run the SQL Server Snapshot Agent. But I found that if I add this user to the SQL Agent users group it works fine.

I have the replication setup and working and I am to the point now where I am creating the application in VS 2005. When I try to add a data connection I don't see "Microsoft SQL Server Mobile Edition" as one of the choices for Data Source. I have a reference to System.Data.SqlServerCe and I have put the "Using System.Data.SqlServerCe" directive in place. Any idea why this dtata source type wouldn't be available?

Thanks.

You need to have the "Smart Device Programmability" VS setup option enabled. It is also a good idea to install VS 2005 SP1 and then add these "SQL Compact" tools for VS 2005 sp1:

Erik,

Thanks for all the help. I really need to get this working.

Ok, I' m not sure where to set the "Smart Device programmability" option. I went to Add/Remove software in control panel and ran the VS 2005 Change/Remove option. I ran the Add/Remove components and repair/reinstall options and don't see the Smart Device progrmmability option.

I downloaded VS 2005 SP1 and installed it. that went ok.

I treid to install the SQL Compact tools for VS 2005 SP 1 ad it says that the patch can not be installed because the program to be upgraded is either missing or the wrong version.

Any other suggestions on this?

|||Under the feature tree, expand Visual C# or Visual Basic, there you will see "Smart Device Programmability"|||

Ok, I have reinstalled VS 2005 with "Smart Device Programmability" in place. I installed VS 2005 SP1 and the SQL CE Tools for VS 2005. Everything installed correctly. I was able to create and test the connection to the replication database file with no problem. However, when I try to create a new data source from the connection I get the following error.

Error creating new data source:

Could not get type information for 'app.appdataset'

After several internet and MS Knowledgebase searches I have found very little concerning this error. Several people are however having the same problem and I've tried all the fixes I've found but no luck. These include:

1. Making sure no tables are named like C# reserved words. The table names are "MembershipData" and "FlightData".

2. making sure that their are no extraneous characters in the connection string.

3. I have seen two references to logging in as a different user on the computer and this fixing the problem. I have tried this but it didn't help. I would also like to understand why this would solve the problem, if it did, so users could be set up correctly in the first place.

I hate to feel like I have to be lead through this process step-by-step but I don't know what else to do.

Thanks again,

Rick

Thanks Erik,

That's exactly what I needed. I have every thing running now except for merge replication through IIS. I'm sure that's an IIS configuration problem that I just have to work on.

New project - thinking of using Visual studio 2005

Hi
I've been developing sql server stored procedures for what seems forever,
right now I just use query analyzer.
I have a new project, and just for a chuckle I'm thinking of using Visual
Studio 2005 for my IDE instead of query analyzer, I'm still pretty much just
going to be creating sql server stored procedures (SQL 2K).
Does anybody have any hints, gotcha's or guidance on whether this is a good
idea, and if so any tips?
I've played around, and one thing I can't find, can I run a SQL and have a
nice output to grid option, like with query analyzer?
The main reason I want to use this, is for being able to put all my sql in a
project, and the integration with sourcesafe.
Thanks in advanceInstead of the 'full' Visual Studio, use the Sql Server Management Studio.
When you disable the 'Summary' tab at startup, it behaves more or less the
same way as ye olde QA, but a little better :)
Yes, you can still have grids and text output :)

project (you can add more folders for managing DDL/DML scripts and such).
Typically I manage my project and the source control integration from within
VS and jump back and forth to management studio depending on the specific
task at hand (say building up and testing a specific set of queries within a
larger procedure). SQL management studio allows for source control
integration and projects but is slightly different. The overall impression
I
have gotten from the two is that the SQL management studio projects are
geared more toward DBA work where as VS is more for the DB developer.

New Crystal Reporter

Hi everyone. I've been developing an application which needs to create a couple of reports. I was going to use microsoft Graph for the Charts but it turns out that that's not recommendable.

So I decided to get into Crystal Reports. The point is that the help I've found is somewhat generic and I need something a little more specific.

What I need to do is to show a chart with the completed and not completed sales in a specific month. And show another form with the percentages of this sales.

I'm using VB6 and an Access database for my project.

If anybody knows where can I find some help... please let me know

Thanx in advance :wave:Create a query in access that summarizes your sales data by month, giving a field for Year & Month, and fields for Complete and Incomplete.
Use the Report Expert to connect to the Access Database, once connected you should see your query exposed as a Stored Procedure.
Select the query, and select field you wish to show, and then group by month.

When done, you should be able to right-click on the Group Header and select ChangeGroup. If you have a properly formated date CR will auto-recognise and type the field as date, and you should see a dropdown combo with caption "The section will be printed".
Select "for each month" from the combo.

When designing the Chart, select Advanced in the Data tab, and in the "Place Chart" combo, you should be able to select the group name, if you want to print the chart for each month, or select once per report option. Later you will put the Chart in the Group Footer if you selected the option to print each change of date (which in this case means each month, cos that's the group selection formula you selected), or put it in the report footer if you selected the "Once per Report" option.
Then select the summary fields that your SQL statement created from the list named "Available Fields" and put them in the "ShowValue(s)" list.
Oh, and don't forget to select an option for the combo above the "Show Values" one.

That just about ought to get you close......

Thanx Dave... I know this maybe a little abusive but, do you have some code so I have another reference?

Anyway... thanx for your reply, I'll try to get it running |||Do you mean the SQL, or code for the report?
Need to work out what you do and don't know......
Only real code in this is SQL, aprt from a formula you'd need to sum the values of Completed and Not Completed, so something like:

SELECT Id, Date, Completed, Value from Sales WHERE (Sales.Date > DateAdd("d", -14, Date()) AND Sales.Date <= Date())

would give you last 14 days of data.
I'd make Completed field a boolean so you can use it in the report to apply logic to an aggregation.

I've attached a zip file with a small table layout in Excel format. You can import it into Access and then open the report.
You may have to reset the Location to ensure that the ODBC connection on your box works Ok - see Database menu, Set Location... option.

Don't forget, if you find what I've given you useful, remember to rate the post and finalise the thread.

Dave|||I mean the CR Code. That's what I'm new at. The query is not that big of a deal (kind of hehe) but the problem is that I don't know how to import those results to a .rpt

I am checkin the zip you attached and hope to find out a way to create my graph. I'll rate the thread anyway.

Thanx a lot springsoft
